Tuesday was more of the same. President Carter’s motorcade was rocked and hit with bottles as it left a community center in the riot-scarred black section of Miami on Monday evening. Lots of churches in the Campobello and Landrum areas could face paying taxes on their property, if they don’t apply to the S. C. Tax Commission for exemption. The state said it mailed out the tax exemption forms, but that the response from previously tax-exempt organiza tions had been poor. The tennis singles and doubles matches for age 12 through 18 will be played this Saturday and Sunday at Harmon Field. Boys and girls singles will be divided into two age catagories. 12 - 14 and 15 -18. Open age singles will be played June 21 and 22 and open age doubles will be played June 28 and 29. The tournament is sponsored by the Polk County Jaycees. Thursday there is a free General Travelogue beginning at 2:30p.m. in the Parish Hall of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church. C. 28782 Price 10c Per Copy Coal Facts At Rotary Rotarians gathering at 12:30, Friday, at the Pacolet River Plantation for a luncheon meeting will see a documentary film, “Coal— An American As set.” . Produced by the U. S. National Coal Association the movie emphasizes the importance of coal in the U. S. economy; demonstrates modern methods and machinery employed in mining and transporting coal; covers current scientific re search to determine coal’s potential; and explains coal’s role in solving America's energy problems. Town Meeting WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 1930 Weaver Elected To Northwestern Bd. Clyde S. Weaver David L. Phillips, Jr., Vice President and City Executive The Tryon Town Council met Monday night at the Town Hall. They held the second required public hearing for HUD Com munity Development Grant which was attended by 17 citizens. Ms. Pat Thomson of the N. C. Department of Natural Resources and Community De velopment explained the final application that will be submitted by the Town. The preliminary application has already been approved. The Grant for $500,000 provides for housing rehabilita tion to bring homes up to the N. C. Housing Code Standards and will be administered by the Town. The work will start in October 1980. A supplementary grant will be filed with the Appalachian Continued On Back Page Polk Central Band Gets Invited To Atlanta The Polk County School Board met Monday in the Superinten dent’s office in the courthouse annex. The Board approved maternity leave for Mrs. Joyce Wilson. Mrs. Pat Booth of the Isothermal Planning Commis sion told about the Day Care facility at Polk Central for 8 to 10 children. This was approved by the Board. The School Calendar for 1980-81 was approved. (The teachers report on August 18th and the children on August 21st). Approved plans for two additional class rooms at Polk Central. Officer of the Northwestern Bank in Tryon has announced that Clyde S Weaver of Landrum, S. C. has been elected to the local Board of Directors of the bank. Mr. Weaver is the owner of Weaver’s used cars and is a lifetime resident of the Landrum area. He is a graduate of Spartanburg Junior College and a member of the Landrum First Baptist Church. Weaver currently serves as a member of the board of directors of the Landrum Medical Associa tion, the Landrum Lions Club and the local chapter of the Shriners. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Garvin Weaver of Landrum, S. C.
